Zion Baptist Church was founded on July 1, 1891 by eighty-one worshipers who left the Third Baptist Church, which was then located on Rock Street and Lavender Lane, to form a congregation of their own. Third Baptist Church is now located on 550 Farmer Street, Petersburg, VA. Reverend Parham was the first minister and unofficial pastor who led the congregation during the initial organization and development of the church. Since 1891, the church has progressed through several stages of development and has become a refuge for religious and community activities, and a beacon light to hundreds of individuals seeking Christ and Christian fellowship.
