Dr. Alia Aunchman is an acute care surgeon at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She specializes in emergency general surgery, appendicitis and critical care. Her research interests include surgical outcomes. When Dr. Aunchman meets patients, it is often under emergent and potentially life-threatening conditions. Her goal is to make it easier for patients and their loved ones to cope with these situations so that everyone can achieve the best possible outcome. As a clinical psychologist, I specialize in the assessment and treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. I believe in building genuine relationships with my patients and their families and working together to answer diagnostic questions and establish treatment objectives. My approach to care is centered around the strengths of the patient and grounded in evidence-based practices. Throughout the assessment process, I make it a priority to listen to and understand families' perspectives and ensure that the patient's contexts, values, and preferences are considered when discussing clinical presentation, family system functioning, and intervention recommendations. Ultimately, my goal is to ensure that families are heard, respected, and understood.
