David J. Lunardini, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Robert Monsey joined the Spine Program at the Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Center as an orthopedic surgeon in 1992. He serves as medical director at the Spine Institute of New England and as an associate professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the Larner College of Medicine at UVM in Burlington, VT. His specialty is in patients with idiopathic and degenerative scoliosis, spinal stenosis, cervical myelopathy, degenerative disease and spinal tumors. Treatment options include spinal decompression, fusion and instrumentation. Dr. Monsey believes that every patient’s condition is unique and it is his role to act as a guide to help patients select the best treatment options for their lifestyles. He is actively involved in laboratory and clinical research, with a focus on the mechanobiology of degenerative disease. Dr. Monsey received the Excellence in Teaching Award in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Vermont in 1995, 1998 and 2003. Dr. Adam Shafritz is an upper extremity surgeon who has been a member of University of Vermont Medical Center Orthopedics & Rehabilitation Medicine since 2001.His area of expertise includes total shoulder replacement, arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair, fractures and dislocations of the shoulder. As a professor in the department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the Larner College of Medicine at UVM in Burlington, VT, Dr. Shafritz is actively involved in lecturing to medical students and teaching residents. Witnessing a patient recover after an injury or be able to throw a ball again is one of the most rewarding and inspiring parts of my job. I specialize in orthopedic surgery and shoulder and elbow surgery, and helping people return to activities they enjoy is both an honor and a privilege. When working with a patient, I strive to understand their goals, expectations and concerns thoroughly. Open communication and discussion can also impact which treatment may give them the best outcome. I want to ensure patients are well-informed and satisfied with their care. I have a reasonably conservative approach to patient care, and surgery is not always the answer. Patients should know that many conditions can be treated nonsurgically or with less invasive methods. The challenge of treating conditions related to shoulder and elbow surgery is something I enjoy, and was one of the reasons I pursued the subspecialty.
