James M. Hotaling, MD, MS, FECSM, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained urologist specializing in Male Infertility, Erectile Dysfunction, Peyronie’s Disease, Testicular Pain, and other complex Men’s Health conditions. As the highest-volume male infertility surgeon in the Mountain West, Dr. Hotaling offers advanced treatments including penile implant surgery, microsurgical testicular sperm extraction (microTESE), and vasectomy reversal, with excellent outcomes. At University of Utah Health, Dr. Hotaling leads a high-volume, comprehensive men’s health practice dedicated exclusively to the care of male reproductive and sexual health. He performs numerous surgical procedures each year for erectile dysfunction, male infertility, chronic testicular pain, and penile curvature (Peyronie’s Disease). He is also one of the few U.S.-based experts in the field to have completed additional training as a Fellow of the European College of Sexual Medicine (FECSM). In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Hotaling is NIH-funded for his research in male infertility and erectile dysfunction and has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles. He regularly presents at national conferences and serves as an editor of Fertility and Sterility, the leading journal in the field and has served as the past president of the Society for The Study of Male Reproduction (SSMR), the top society for male infertility in the United States. Dr. Hotaling is the Medical Director of the Fertility Integrated Practice Unit, Director of the Men’s Health Program, and Co-Director of the Reconstructive Urology and Men’s Health Fellowship at the University of Utah. Since joining the faculty in 2013, he has been committed to advancing care for men with reproductive and sexual health challenges. Training and Education Dr. Hotaling earned his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College, graduating magna cum laude with a double major in history and biophysical chemistry. He received his medical degree from Duke University, followed by a six-year urology residency at the University of Washington, where he trained under renowned penile reconstructive surgeon Dr. Hunter Wessells. He then completed a fellowship in Male Infertility and Men’s Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago, working with Dr. Craig Niederberger. There, he developed advanced skills in microsurgical techniques including testicular sperm extraction (TESE), microTESE, and vasectomy reversal. He speaks Mandarin Chinese fluently and actively participates in humanitarian service, including past surgical trips to Kenya, China, and Indonesia. Dr. McRae is a native of Bountiful, Utah, and in his free time, he enjoys many outdoor activities with his wife and family. He also enjoys piano and choral music.
