In 2001 Speedy Towing's founder, Brian Coleman, had a vision to change and improve the local towing industry. As a franchised dealer for Snap On Tools, he was able to observe tow trucks coming and going from the auto dealerships and repair shops where he sold tools to professional auto mechanics. He noticed a lack of professionalism with many of the companies he encountered in the towing industry. With his automotive knowledge, sales and business training, he felt he could excel in that business and Speedy Towing was born. Eight months after starting from nothing, he had 3 flatbed tow trucks that were exceptionally busy with breakdown towing. From there, Speedy Towing branched out into police impounds. An impound yard was acquired at this time which allowed Speedy Towing to begin taking rotation calls for several law enforcement agencies. Soon after that, two more impound yard locations were added along with private property impound calls. The business was growing fast and the time had come to move out of the home based office. A location was found with both a shop and a small office. It was a place where the drivers could go to catch up on paperwork and maintain trucks. The office portion served as a place of business for dispatch and accounting. The shop portion was used for quick repairs which helped keep downtime to a minimum. The years to come were spent managing the growth and learning how to find and keep good employees. Offering health insurance, vacation pay, and holiday pay were great ways to minimize turnover. Brian put many systems in place to assure professionalism such as driver training programs, uniforms, specific towing industry software, a professional phone system, and GPS equipment in every truck. While learning more and more about the towing industry, Brian noticed that only 3 of the 80+ tow companies in the Salt Lake County area were able to tow and recover semi trucks. This seemed to be the perfect next step to take to expand the business. Brian and his drivers traveled out of state to obtain heavy tow truck training and purchased a new tandem axle 30 ton wrecker. A semi tractor with a 35 ton sliding axle trailer specialized for the towing industry came next. Other equipment was obtained to make sure there wasn't anything Speedy Towing couldn't do. Six years, eleven trucks, five impound locations, and fourteen employees later, Speedy Towing continues to grow at a rapid pace and is setting a standard for its competitors to follow.
