History

In 1870, as the Unites States was recovering from the American Civil War, Rev. E. Venable formed a small band of believers to form, and build a church...made from logs, that would serve as a house of worship for the freedman living throughout Liberty and Dayton counties. Although free, they faced the racial bigotry of a nation that brought a legacy of bitterness and segregation that lasted well into the 1960's. But that didn't deter their faith or resolve to create a place that would serve as, a worship center, a safe haven, a secret meeting hall, a kitchen to feed the needy and a baccalaureate hall for the graduating class of Liberty Colored High School. We will forever be grateful for the lives of Sip Baldwin, George Rich, John Banks Frank Prater, Robert Baldwin, Henry Moore, Jacob Smith, Shade Lockhart and Clabe Baldwin.
