HistoryModern Woodmen was founded in 1883 in Lyons, Iowa. At the time, the pioneering woodmen were clearing the trees to build communities. As it was a dangerous profession which often times left behind widows and orphans, the founder of Modern Woodmen -Joseph Cullen Root- put together a company that would help secure the families that were left behind. He wanted to create the largest fraternal benefit society in the nation.
