Established in 1953, the Texas Historical Commission works to preserve architectural, archeological and cultural landmarks. The commission operates more than 15 historic sites, including house museums, military forts and archeological sites. It offers training to historical commissions, heritage organizations and museums in Texas. The commission also publishes educational materials on a range of preservation topics. The Texas Historical Commission manages administration, archeology, architecture and community heritage development divisions. The commission operates the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission, which is a nonprofit organization. Its History Programs Division identifies, evaluates and interprets historic and cultural resources. The commission manages a store that offers books, posters and videos. The Texas Historical Commission publishes a magazine, The Medallion, which contains news and advice about preservation projects and heritage tourism opportunities.
