Bordered by Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, Louisiana to the east, the Gulf of Mexico to the southeast, Mexico to the southwest, and New Mexico to the west. Nicknamed the "Lone Star State" for its former status as an independent republic, and as a reminder of the state's struggle for independence from Mexico. The states name comes from the Caddo word t√°ysha º meaning '"friends".
