Sean C. Blackwell, MD, MBA, is a board-certified and fellowship-trained maternal-fetal medicine specialist with clinical and scientific expertise in preterm birth, medical complications of pregnancy, the role of obesity in pregnancy outcomes, pregnancy in women with physical disabilities, fetal brain injury, and shoulder dystocia. He’s also a professor, the chair, vice president of strategy and development for obstetrics and gynecology, assistant dean, Memorial Hermann Chair, and the Emma Sue Hightower Development Board Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Services at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. In collaboration with division directors, he oversees all aspects of women’s services at UTHealth Houston and UT Physicians. He has played a key role in developing and expanding several high-impact programs, including the UTHealth Houston Fetal Center and the Placenta Accreta Program. In addition to expanding the department’s clinical footprint, he has led substantial growth in research initiatives in one of the nation’s largest OB-GYN departments. Blackwell also serves as director of McGovern Medical School’s Larry C. Gilstrap, MD, Center for Perinatal and Women’s Health Research and as assistant dean for healthcare quality in perinatal medicine and women’s health. He is a graduate of the Physician Quality and Safety Academy at Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center and holds an executive MBA from Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business. An internationally recognized leader in women’s health, Blackwell previously served on the board of directors and as president of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He is a member of several professional societies, including the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the Central Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Houston Gynecological and Obstetrical Society, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Blackwell has also contributed to the academic community as an associate editor for “Pregnancy and Childbirth” and “BMC Research Notes,” guest editor for “Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics of North America” and “Obstetrics and Gynecology International,” and served on the editorial boards of “Obstetrics and Gynecology International,” “Journal of Pregnancy, Gynecology & Obstetrics: Current Research,” and the “American Journal of Perinatology.”
