One weekend Dr. Nance travelled home to San Antonio for a visit and had a life changing conversation with her father. He reminded her that when he was diagnosed with diabetes, the main symptom that led to his diagnosis was his vision. He was having trouble seeing and just assumed that he needed a pair of glasses. It was at his eye exam that he showed signs of Diabetes. That same day the diagnosis was confirmed by their family doctor. Dr. Nance at that time was unaware that you could be diagnosed as a diabetic simply by having an eye exam! Soon afterward she changed her major from Pre-Medicine to Pre-Optometry! To this day when her patients ask her why she became an Optometrist, she responds,
