Matthew Smolin, MD is Board Certified in Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology and is a fellow of both the American College of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Intervention. Not unlike many of his colleagues, Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Matthew Smolin became a physician because it combined an interest in science with a desire to help people. Dr. Smolin graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from State University of New York at Albany in Albany, New York. He completed a medical degree on an Army scholarship at New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York and served in the Individual Ready Reserves as 2nd Lieutenant. He completed his internal medicine residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. He then spent two years practicing internal medicine in Italy before completing his cardiology fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. In 1994, Dr. Smolin was honorably discharged from the Army having achieved the rank of Major. His last tour of active duty was two years at D.D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center Fort Gordon in Georgia where he also trained on the job in interventional cardiology with an experienced academic cardiologist in the days before coronary artery stents. He would re-commission in the US Army Reserves (he has since retired). At the same time, Dr. Smolin completed a Master of Business Administration degree in healthcare management from Western Governors University based in Salt Lake City, Utah. He joined South Texas Cardiovascular Consultants in late 2018 and sees patients at the Kerrville office and Methodist Hospital | Texsan.
