Upon returning to the states, Sheryl attended Sophie Newcomb College, part of Tulane University, where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1967.Sheryl attended the University of Texas School of Law in Austin where she received many academic and leadership honors and accolades.She became the first female law clerk to a federal judge in the Southern District of Texas, a part of the Fifth Circuit.During her clerkship, Sheryl taught law becoming the first female on the faculty of South Texas College of Law.Thereafter, she became the first woman on the partnership track at the firm of Baker and Botts, primarily engaging in civil litigation and family law for over six years. In 1980, she opened her own boutique firm specializing in family law.In 1978, Sheryl along with three other family lawyers, founded the Family Law Section of the Houston Bar Association. Thereafter, she served two terms as president of the organization.In 1979, Sheryl became one of the first females to become certified by the Texas Bar Association as a family law specialist.Sheryl became the third female in Texas to be asked to join the prestigious American Academy of Matrimonial Attorneys.
