The Hays County Historical Commission is a dedicated group of volunteers appointed by the Hays County Commissioners Court to preserve the history and cultural resources of Hays County. Since its establishment in 1953, the Commission has been active in implementing state historical programs, preserving cemeteries and historical sites, and nominating properties to the National Register of Historic Places.

In addition to erecting historical markers and conducting comprehensive surveys of significant locations, the Commission publishes educational resources and engages with the community to promote awareness of the county's rich heritage. Their ongoing projects, such as the restoration of the old jail in downtown San Marcos, highlight their commitment to maintaining and celebrating Hays County's historical legacy.
