Established in 1836 by the Republic of Texas Congress, the Texas General Land Office manages more than 20 million acres of state property and works to protect and preserve natural resources. It leases state land for a variety of purposes, including oil and gas production and commercial and sustainable energy development. The office supports the asset management program that helps to promote efficient use of state real property. In addition, the Texas General Land Office administers recycling, adopt-a-beach, coastal, and oil spill prevention and response programs. The office triggers economic development through its natural gas marketing initiatives and loan programs offered to veterans through the Texas Veterans Land Board. It also hosts several important conferences on environmental issues. The Texas General Land Office is located in Austin, Texas.
