First United Methodist Church

For over 160 years, folks have gathered ( here ) to worship God Who offers us love, mercy and grace beyond measure. We come from many walks and backgrounds. Some of us are native to the area, some are newcomers. Some grew up with a church background ; some may wonder what church is all about. Yet we all have something in common: We are all seekers. We seek meaning, purpose and direction for our lives. We seek to leave our unique impressions on life and times and those around us. We also seek those close and meaningful relationships which God alone can provide. Yes, we are all seekers: of hope, of joy, of faith, of love. You're invited and encouraged to come join us in the journey of a lifetime seeking God! The United Methodist Church has always welcomed people from a variety of backgrounds and walks of life. It is our desire to be intentional in sharing Gods love, mercy and grace with any who have need. At First United Methodist Church, Port Lavaca, you will find a warm welcome as we celebrate the gift of life: a gift to all people from God in Jesus Christ. In the United Methodist Church we observe two sacraments: Holy Communion ( the Eucharist ) and Baptism. We do believe that there are sacramental qualities in other significant acts and events in people's lives, but because of our definition of sacrament , observe only the two sacraments in the Church. In the celebration of Holy Communion all are welcome to participate regardless of church or spiritual background, for we believe the act of sacrifice that Jesus made for the forgiveness of sins was and is for all people, in all places, for all time. As for Baptism, we believe that act to be vitally important as a sign and symbol of our belonging to God and being a part of the household of God. You need to know too, that all Christian Baptisms are accepted by the United Methodist Church.
