Duval, a soldier in the Texas Revolution who died in the Goliad Massacre. The county seat is San Diego, and it became an independent county in 1876 after a successful petition by its citizens.

The county has a rich history, with its first courthouse being a rented two-story stone building in 1876. However, it burned down in 1914 under mysterious circumstances. The present courthouse was built in 1916, and an annex was added in 1938. Duval County offers various county offices and services, including justice of the peace, county extensions, victims of crime assistance program, and social services.
