At Jacob's previous employer he set up the various systems (phone, internet, workstations, servers, etc.), Jacob's job consisted of basic maintenance and support calls. He automated the maintenance and was able to take most support calls over the phone. His value at the financial institution lay in his knowledge of the setup and his ability to fix a variety of problems quickly. While doing IT work on the side, Jacob realized that for some companies it's not cost efficient to hire a full-time IT guy. Most of the work was in the setup and the maintenance, not everyday work.
