Brazos Valley African American Museum
The Brazos Valley African American Museum, operated by the African American National Heritage Society, is dedicated to exploring, developing, preserving, and presenting the cultural history and heritage of African Americans in the Brazos Valley. Established on the site of one of the region's original black schools, the museum officially opened to the public in July 2006, thanks to the vision of retired educator Mrs. Mell Pruitt.
As the first institution of its kind in the Brazos Valley, the museum offers a variety of resources, including archival records, historical artifacts, and educational programs aimed at fostering an understanding of African American values and contributions. It encourages community involvement through memberships, volunteer opportunities, and special events, enriching the cultural landscape of the area.
