Gulf Coast Community Services Association is one of Texas' largest community action agencies. Its mission in Harris County is to help low-income residents become self-sufficient. The association does this by offering a variety of services that include housing counseling, senior services, adult education classes, summer youth services, after-school programs, clothing and school supply vouchers, and food pantries. It also provides bus tokens for job search and medical appointments, transportation for elderly and disabled individuals, family needs assessments with follow-up, an employment skills program, prescription vouchers for needed medication and a Head Start program for more than 1,860 children in southeast Houston, Pasadena, Deer Park and South Houston, Texas. Roberts Elementary School is a learning center that is a part of the Houston Independent School District, which is one of the largest school systems in the United States. The district operates more than 285 educational institutions with a combined enrollment of over 202,000 students. Located in Houston, Roberts Elementary School provides academic services to nearly 640 students in prekindergarten through fifth grade. The school employs a staff of approximately 40 full-time, certified teachers and paraprofessionals. It conducts educational classes in a variety of subjects, such as reading, writing, spelling, math, science, social studies, art, music, computer applications, and health and physical education. Roberts Elementary School also offers special classes in gifted and talented education and the English as a Second Language program.
