Standing Stone State Forest
Standing Stone State Forest, covering 8,344 acres/3,377 ha, was established in 1961 after initial land purchases by the Resettlement Administration. Situated in Overton and Clay Counties on the Eastern Highland Rim, it is around 20 miles north of Cookeville with State Route 136 running through it.
The forest features a diverse landscape with 92% under regulated forest, 8% unregulated, 0.3% pine, and 1.6% mixed hardwood and pine. With stands varying in age from less than 20 years to over 80 years, the area also boasts 14 cemeteries and 2 in-holdings. While hunting remains a popular activity, visitors can also enjoy hiking and horseback riding in this scenic locale.
