The Memphis Police Department maintains social order and peace, as well as provides law enforcement services to the residents. It has a training academy that include a more than 150 seat auditorium, a gymnasium, video production lab, driver training track and 24-lane indoor shooting range. The Memphis Police Department maintains a felony response unit that handles preliminary investigations related to rape, homicide, robbery, burglary and larceny. The department operates a harbor patrol unit that is responsible for the safety and enforcement of marine activities. It employs more than 780 civilians, including dispatchers, police service technicians, administrators, mechanics, clerks, neighborhood watch coordinators and school crossing guards. The Memphis Police Department has been operational for more than 175 years and maintains a location in Memphis, Tenn.
