Med Maps was started by our founder and President, Joe Wells. Joe graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1976 with a degree in Communication Arts & Design. He began working with a wayfinding company in 1985, utilizing his degree and building his knowledge base in the wayfinding arena. In 1989, he began working with SAIC in Oak Oak Ridge TN, and he became head of the wayfinding division 2 years later. In this capacity, Joe worked with hospitals and other industries on wayfinding systems, performing wayfinding analyses, creating signage and, of course, producing visitor maps. SAIC decided to no longer support this business area in the late 1990's, but Joe saw the continued need for this business discipline, especially within the healthcare industry. He founded SmartGuides for Hospitals on May 21, 1999, working out of his basement ( as well as a working a 2nd job in order to support the business and his family ). The success of SmartGuides grew, and the company was able to move out of the house and into the location in which they operate today. Joe later changed the name of the company to Med Maps, and we continue to grow, building a strong presence within the hospital wayfinding industry. Known for our customer service and attention to detail, Med Maps strives to be the leader in this meticulous graphic design area, having already produced thousands of maps for over 400 hospitals.
