South Dakota is a state in the upper Midwest located in the southern part of the former Dakota Territory. The state became part of the US on November 2, 1889 along with North Dakota making them the 39th & 40th states to be added. South Dakota is bordered by North Dakota to the north, Minnesota to the east, Iowa to the southeast, Nebraska to the south, Wyoming to the west, and Montana to the northwest.
The State of South Dakota is made up of two sub-states, separate by the Missouri River, Eastern and Western. It has four distinct seasons which are beautiful and ever-changing year-round. The eastern part of the state has a larger population than other parts because it's more fertile soil. Mount Rushmore, a major tourist destination and the symbol of South Dakota.
The largest cities on the South Dakota map are Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Aberdeen, Brookings, and Watertown.
