Lower Brule Sioux Tribe
The Lower Brule Sioux Tribe's Environmental Protection Office (EPO) is dedicated to safeguarding public health through environmental education, monitoring, and the development of codes and ordinances. Collaborating with other environmental agencies, the EPO focuses on addressing issues like shoreline erosion along the Missouri River, which poses threats to cultural sites and community resources.
Since 2011, the EPO has implemented advanced technologies such as unmanned aerial systems and ground-based LiDAR to monitor and analyze shoreline changes. Their Water Quality Program, in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey and Oglala Lakota College, aims to mitigate the impacts of erosion while promoting sustainable environmental practices within the Lower Brule community.
