880 S Cedar St
Freeman, SD 57029
Our museum is open year-round and features a large collection of artifacts detailing life on the plains and the gradual building up of the community that is now Freeman, SD. This area was settled by several Germans-from-Russia groups, including Lutherans, Reformed, Catholics, Mennonites, Amish & Hutterites. You'll find everything from Native American artifacts, immigrant trunks and household items, items from early businesses, cars, motorcycles, a 1927 bi-plane, agricultural equipment and much more! Our historical buildings -- a pioneer home, one-room school house and two early rural churches -- allow visitors to step into the rich history of this area. In addition, an archives & historical library offer researchers a variety of resources about the greater community. Located on U.S. Hwy. 81, Freeman is under an hour from Yankton, Sioux Falls or Mitchell. It is home to the South Dakota Chislic Festival, held the last Saturday of July in the Prairie Arboretum right next to our museum.
