The Brownsville Volunteer Fire Department, established in 1958, is a dedicated, fully volunteer organization serving the northern Black Hills of western South Dakota. With a mission focused on protecting life, property, and valuable resources, the department covers a community of approximately 712 primary structures within a 100 square mile fire district.

In 2024, the department enhanced its capabilities by purchasing a 2015 Water Tanker to be converted into a Fire Tender, showcasing its commitment to upgrading equipment and resources. Funded primarily through private donations, with 75% of their budget coming from community support, the volunteer firefighters actively participate in Mutual Aid agreements with surrounding fire districts to ensure comprehensive assistance when needed.
