100 S Congress St
Winnsboro, SC 29180

The Town Clock, situated in Winnsboro, SC, holds a rich historical significance dating back to the late 18th century. Originally established as a public market, the town council later petitioned for the erection of a new market house and town clock in the early 19th century.

Colonel William McCreight, the Intendent of the town in 1837, oversaw the importation and installation of the clock works, which have since kept the clock running continuously for over a century. The accompanying French-made bell, known for its beautiful tone, served the community until it required repairs after a fire in 1895.

In 1875, the present tower housing the Town Clock was constructed, showcasing the craftsmanship of John Smart, an African-American carpenter from Winnsboro. Today, the first floor accommodates town meetings and voting activities, while the second floor is the headquarters of the Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce.
