John Scott, MD, is a bariatric and general surgeon at Prisma Health in Greenville, South Carolina. He is the director of the bariatric surgery program and chief of the Minimal Access and Bariatric Surgery division at Prisma Health, and is a clinical professor of surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. In addition, he serves as program director for the Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship Program and medical director for Nutrition Solutions. Dr. Scott holds a bachelor's degree in biology from Baylor University and a master's degree in molecular cell sciences from the University of Memphis. He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis and then completed his residency in general surgery at Greenville Health System. He went on to complete a fellowship in advanced minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at the University of Cincinnati. After serving as a faculty member with the University of Tennessee Knoxville University Medical Center, he returned to Prisma Health, joining the Weight Management Institute. His clinical practice and academic work are concentrated primarily on bariatric surgery. The scope of his research has centered new technology and comorbidity reduction as well as studies on access to bariatric care. In addition to his duties with Prisma Health, Scott serves as an at-large member of the executive council and has previously served as the president of the Bariatric Society of the Carolinas, chairman of the ASMBS Program Committee, chairman of the ASMBS Access to Care Committee and member of the South Carolina Medical Association Childhood Obesity Taskforce. He is currently the representative for the ASMBS in the American Medical Association House of Delegates and sits on the board of directors for the ObesityPAC and the Obesity Action Coalition. He also serves on the question writing board for the Focus Practice Designation Committee for the American Board of Surgery. He is an editorial board member for Surgery for Obesity and Related Disease. Dr. Scott is board certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery, is a diplomate for the American Board of Obesity Medicine and remains active in the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the Southern Surgical Association. He is a fellow of the ACS and the ASMBS.

He is a Professor of Surgery USC School of Medicine, Greenville. He is the past president for both the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Southwestern Surgical Congress. He is also the incoming President of the Fellowship Council. His passion for research and surgical quality is evident with over 300 national presentations and lectures, published journal articles and editorial contributions. Dr. Kothari is currently serving as the Jean and H. Harlan Stone Chair of Surgery in the Upstate.
