Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina

Bernice Huang, M.D. is an endocrine surgeon who collaborates closely with the Hollings Cancer Center, bringing innovative techniques and procedures to endocrine patients in South Carolina. Dr. Huang completed her endocrine surgery fellowship at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and general surgery residency at Columbia University, where she also dedicated a year to clinical research in endocrine surgery. Dr. Huang has expertise in the posterior retroperitoneoscopic approach for adrenal surgery that accesses the adrenal gland through the back, simplifying the laparoscopic procedure and minimizing postoperative pain. She also has clinical and research interests in the care and surgical management of patients with renal hyperparathyroidism, thyroid surgery, parathyroid surgery, adrenal surgery, thyroid cancer, hyperparathyroidism, and familial endocrine tumor syndromes. She focuses her research on improving clinical outcomes and addressing disparities in care for these patients. Dr. Huang received her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2015 and a bachelor of science degree in biological engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Kimberley Youkhana, M.D., is a Hematologist specializing in caring for patients with blood clots, inherited bleeding and platelet disorders, and hemoglobinopathies. Dr Youkhana (said You-con-a) trained in both Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Medical Hematology, positioning her to care for patients transitioning from Pediatric to Adult Classical Hematology care and for adult patients with any of these acquired or inherited rare blood diseases. It also makes her well-suited for her role as the Director of the Hemostasis and Thrombosis program at MUSC. Her research focuses on optimizing individual patient care and health care delivery for patients with blood diseases. When asked about her choice of a career caring for patients with non-cancerous blood diseases, Dr. Youkhana says, "One of the things I enjoy about Classical Hematology is piecing together what is happening with my patients: taking apart the complex case and making a plan that is centered on evidence and adapted to the patient.".

Dr. Alicia M. Zukas joined MUSC in 2021 as a faculty physician and Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery. Her career spans research, education, and clinical practice. Her clinical research interests are primary brain tumors, including glioblastoma, spinal cord tumors, and brain metastases.Dr. Zukas graduated from Bryn Mawr College and completed medical school and residency at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she served as chief resident. She completed her neuro-oncology fellowship at the University of Virginia. She has served as an attending physician, clerkship director, and fellowship director. Dr. Zukas is a renowned teacher in the neurosciences and has earned numerous teaching and patient care awards, including the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine award. Her other interests include learning about neurotoxicology and making educational videos. She also enjoys writing and performing rock music. She is a member of the AA medical honor society.
