The Dr. Rosa H. Gantt Historical Marker in Spartanburg, SC, commemorates the life and contributions of Dr. Rosa Hirschmann Gantt, a pioneering physician and suffrage leader. Born in Camden, South Carolina, she is recognized as the first woman physician in Spartanburg, establishing her medical practice in 1901 and advocating for women's rights throughout her career.
As a founding member of the South Carolina Equal Suffrage League in 1914, Dr. Gantt played a significant role in the fight for women's voting rights, serving as Legislative Chairman and addressing the South Carolina House Judiciary Committee in support of a suffrage amendment. Although her efforts at the state level were ultimately unsuccessful, her legacy contributed to the nationwide achievement of women's suffrage with the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920.
