The Darlington County Historical Commission, established in 1965, is a government board consisting of 8 members appointed by County Council. Originally formed as an extension of the Darlington County Historical Society, the commission's primary objective is to preserve and promote the historical heritage of Darlington County, South Carolina. They oversee the marking of historic sites with state-approved historical markers and manage the Jacob Kelley House Museum, a well-preserved house museum furnished with antiques and open for regular visits.

With an annual budget allocation, the commission ensures the maintenance and upkeep of the Jacob Kelley House, including utilities and miscellaneous costs. They also collaborate with prison farm labor for the maintenance of the house and its grounds. Additionally, the commission operates a small office in the county courthouse, where a paid director provides assistance and information to visitors on Saturdays.
