He has lived in Cambridge, Maryland, where he earned his Ph.D. in marine and environmental science, and Charlottesville, Virginia, where he worked at the University of Virginia in adult and science education research and at Mary Baldwin College (in Staunton, Virginia) where he taught environmental science. He returned to the Charleston area to attend the Medical University of South Carolina for medical school training. He completed his family medicine residency training at the Trident Medical Center/MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program in Charleston.
