South Street Station
The South Street Station, formerly known as The Narragansett Electric Company Power Station, is a historic electrical power generation station in Providence, Rhode Island. Built between 1912 and 1952, the Classical Revival-style building provided coal-generated electricity to the city until its decommissioning in 1995.
Following its redevelopment in 2017 as South Street Landing, the 58,000-square-foot structure now serves as an administrative office and academic facility for local universities, including Brown University, Rhode Island College, and the University of Rhode Island. The project, costing an estimated $220 million and receiving significant state and federal tax credits, has revitalized the historic building into a vibrant educational and cultural hub in the city.
