The Rochambeau Statue, located at the southwest corner of Lafayette Park in Washington D.C., was unveiled in 1902 to commemorate General Comte de Rochambeau, a key figure in the American Revolutionary War who allied with George Washington. This monument symbolizes the enduring Franco-American relations that were critically important in the early twentieth century, especially after the tensions of the 1898 Spanish-American War.

Created by French sculptor Fernand Hamar, the statue was authorized by the U.S. Congress following a proposal from French chancellor Jules Boeufv, highlighting the historical connections between the two nations. The dedication event, which drew large crowds and high-profile dignitaries, reaffirmed the diplomatic ties and cooperative spirit that continues to define the relationship between France and the United States.

Pretty spot in Newport. Lots of space to walk and benches to sit and just enjoy the day. This city by the sea is so rich in history. The Rochambeau statue is one of those historical stops.
