Rhode Island Marine Archaeology
The Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (RIMAP), established in 1992, engages both diving and non-diving public members in a systematic study of Rhode Island's rich maritime history and marine archaeology. As a federally recognized 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, RIMAP focuses on research, preservation, and educational outreach related to the state's extensive underwater cultural heritage.
Rhode Island, known for having the highest shipwreck density per square mile in the U.S., is home to numerous historic vessels, including Native American crafts, Colonial ships, and naval wrecks. RIMAP is dedicated to preserving these archaeological sites, many of which face threats from erosion and commercial activities.
