Needles can be inserted just beneath the skin at specific points along the energy pathways to restore health and alleviate symptoms. Japanese palpation-based acupuncture, the style used in our office, is unique in that the diagnosis and monitoring of the treatment are done not by a pulse diagnosis but by palpating reflection zones in the abdomen. Palpation and pressure on corresponding acupuncture points to see if there is a positive change of the reflection zones is done before any needles are inserted. This allows us to use fewer needles, smaller needles, and allow the patient to feel the positive change of treating a point before a needle is ever used.
