Garland Industries, formerly Lew Manufacturing, was founded by Louis Lanoie more than 75 years ago. For many years, the company manufactured mechanisms and other components for well-known United States and European companies. Garland is one of the first patent holders of the ballpoint twist mechanism. Under the leadership of Raymond Lanoie, the son of Garland s founder, the photo logo epoxy process was developed, and a patent was awarded in 1965 for the flared-top design. At this time, Garland began manufacturing its own line of writing instruments. The photo logo process is imitated by other pen manufacturers, but the flared-top continues to be Garland s signature exclusively. Garland s manufacturing plant might be described as a typical New England plant with all operations housed in a historical brick building. It moved to this site in 1958 and quickly expanded to a present day manufacturing capacity of 65,000 square feet.
