In 1847 seven Sisters of Mercy from Ireland established Pittsburgh s first hospital, Mercy Hospital, which has since grown into Pittsburgh Mercy Health System. The system is a network of medical facilities and programs that provide services to residents in and around the Pittsburgh area. Its flagship facility is still Mercy Hospital, which offers services in the areas of heart care, cancer care, trauma and burn treatment, women s health, children s health, senior care, diabetes, nerve disorders, behavioral health and rehabilitation. The system s other facilities include Mercy Jeannette Hospital, Mercy Hospital North Shore and Mercy Senior Care. Pittsburgh Mercy Health System is a member of Catholic Health East, a nationwide, nonprofit, Catholic-based health care system.

Beginnings offers child care and development services. It administers an early intervention program that serves disabled children up to the age of 3. The organization provides motor language, cognitive, self-help, physical, occupational and speech therapy and nutrition services. Beginnings also administers the Right from the Start program that offers home visits by a child development teacher. Its parent and child together program organizes plays and painting and music competitions. The organization additionally offers recruitment and screening, as well as training sessions for community volunteers for abused and neglected children.
