Dr. Johnson completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, serving as the administrative chief resident during her final year. She then went on to complete fellowship training in spinal cord injury medicine at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, NJ. As a physiatrist who is fellowship-trained in spinal cord injury medicine, Dr. Johnson’s areas of expertise include medical management and prevention of early and late complications following spinal cord injury and other related neurological diagnoses such as multiple sclerosis, transverse myelitis, and cerebral palsy. She sees patients with medical complications such as neurogenic bowel, neurogenic bladder, pressure injuries, neuropathic pain, spasticity, autonomic dysreflexia, heterotopic ossification, and orthostasis. Dr. Johnson’s treatment approach emphasizes education, shared decision making, preventative strategies, and evidence-based medicine. She has been trained to prognosticate neurologic recovery and functional outcomes after spinal cord injury and can design a comprehensive therapeutic plan and prescribe equipment that promotes function and independence. Dr. Johnson is well versed in all treatment strategies ranging from lifestyle interventions to medications to minimally invasive procedures. She can perform injections to treat spasticity (including botulinum toxin, nerve blocks, etc.) and can manage intrathecal baclofen pumps.
