St. Mary’s Church, established in 1763, is a historic Roman Catholic church in Philadelphia that played a significant role in the life of Colonial and Revolutionary America. Originally a Sunday church for the parishioners of Old St. Joseph Church, it became a parish in its own right and was the site of the first public religious commemoration of the Declaration of Independence.
In 1810, Old St. Mary’s Church became the first cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Philadelphia, serving in this capacity until 1838. The church has been frequented by notable figures, including George Washington and John Adams, who appreciated its musical offerings and the spiritual atmosphere it provided during a pivotal time in American history.
