National Shrine of Saint Rita of Cascia

The National Shrine of Saint Rita of Cascia was originally founded as a church parish and community center over a century ago. The pastoral care is and has always been provided by the Augustinian Friars. St. Rita was a nun in the Augustinian community. Thousands of people from around the world visit St. Rita's monthly to offer prayers to the saint, experience its place in religious history and to enjoy the beautiful architecture.

There is metered street parking in front of the shrine and a parking lot that can be reserved for tours. The shrine has a Broad Street-Orange Line subway stop directly out front at the Ellsworth-Federal stop. Visitors can also grab the SEPTA C line Bus and exit at Broad and Ellsworth Streets.

The worst time to go to St. Rita's is late on a Friday or on a Saturday afternoon unless you reserve a tour those days. St. Rita's is a very popular church for weddings. The church and grounds close early on those days.

The best time to go is on a Wednesday evening when the friars bless the relic of St. Rita. Many visitors choose to have their pilgrimage include this special evening of prayer and silence.

There are 13 large stained glass windows within the shrine that are breathtaking and internationally known. Visitors can examine them on their own or include the stained glass in a guided tour.
Group tours can be arranged so visitors can hear the history of St. Rita and her shrine will visiting the newly renovated upper and lower churches, ask for prayers be said in their names. There is a gift shop on site as well.

The shrine is just six blocks away from the famous Italian Market which is over 100 years old. It caters to people who enjoy open-air cart shopping. It also houses some of Philadelphia's best low-key Italian restaurants and shops.

Since the shrine is located along the Broad Street-Orange subway line, visitors can head north on the subway and stop in the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts for a concert or coffee. Or travelers may head south on the subway and catch one of the major sporting events in Philadelphia - depending upon the season.

The shrine is about 8 blocks from the famous cheesesteak joints, Pat's King of Steaks and Geno's Steaks. Visitors can order a cheesesteak "wit whiz" and be fully entertained by the personalities behind the counters. Both spots are open 24 hours a day.
