Dr. Alcala received his medical degree from Saint George's University School of Medicine in Grenada. He completed his general surgical internship in Livingston, N.J., at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and second year of general surgical residency in Morristown, N.J., at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He underwent three years of a National Institute of Health research fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute in Pittsburgh, Pa. Dr. Alcala has received an award as a minority scholar in the field of cancer research. He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, the USA Boxing Association, the American Association of Family Physicians, and the American Board of Family Medicine.
