The Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania, established in 1909, is engaged in various activities that include providing temporary shelter, food, and medical attention to neglected and injured animals, restoring lost animals to their owners and seeking new homes for them, fostering a caring attitude towards animals and providing a merciful end for terminally- ill pets. Open seven days a week, the ARL operates a clinic in Pittsburg and an animal-shelter in nearby Rosedale. The clinic, staffed by licensed veterinarians and animal care specialists and augmented by animal-handling volunteers, offers services for pets such as general surgery and spay-neutering at a low cost. Support for the ARL comes from membership, gifts and memorials.
