The agency was created by state law on Nov. 29, 1933, at the end of Prohibition. Pennsylvania is one of 17 states and two Maryland counties in the U.S. that controls the sale of alcohol. The agency is governed by a three-person Board whose members are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by two-thirds of the state Senate.
