Devereux traces its roots back to 1912 when a Philadelphia teacher took an interest in youngsters considered slow by most of her colleagues. Through the Devereux Foundation, Helena T. Devereux thought students could learn in an environment tailored to their needs. So she took three students into her parent s home, where they learned the to read write and perform arithmetic, they also acquired daily living skills. After her success with these youngsters, she borrowed $500 and began her first residential treatment program in Devon, Pa. The Devereux Foundation provides services to children, adults and families with special needs, which derive from behavioral, psychological, intellectual or neurological impairments. In a range of settings that include home, school, community, campus-based programs and hospitals, the Devereux Foundation provides services to individuals who have emotional, developmental and behavioral needs. Children, adolescents and adults come to Devereux from several states and foreign countries.
