W. Atlee Burpee & Company was founded in Philadelphia in 1876 by an 18 year-old with a passion for plants and animals and $1000 dollars of 'seed money . Within 25 years W. Atlee Burpee had developed the largest, most progressive seed company in the United States, mailing a million catalogues a year to the country's gardeners. Burpee remains a family seed company and still in the Philadelphia area. Scientists at Bucknell University provide knowledge and skills in the development of several unique Burpee seeds.
