40700 E Historic Columbia River Hwy
Corbett, OR 97019

Soaring 733 feet above the Columbia River on the Crown Point promontory, Vista House is a 55-foot tall, two-tiered octagonal observatory. Built between 1916 and 1918, Vista House was designed to be a tribute to Oregon's pioneers, a rest stop for travelers and a scenic viewpoint for long-range views of the river. Located on the Historic Columbia River Highway at the western end of the Columbia River Gorge, Vista House is one of Oregon's most iconic landmarks.

Parking and public transportation at Vista House
Vista House is not easily reachable by public transportation. The best way to reach Vista House is by car. It is located approximately 24 miles east of Portland, Oregon. To reach it, take I-84 East to Exit 22 to access the Historic Columbia River Highway. There is a small parking lot at Vista House.

Best and worst times to visit Vista House
In the summer months, the parking lot and viewing areas can be crowded. In general, any time of year, as long as the weather is clear, will provide wonderful seasonal views of the river and its landscape. Winter brings the landscape into sharp relief. Autumn is full of color, and spring and summer bring greenery, wildflowers and flowering trees.

Admission to Vista House
There is no admission fee. Vista House is open daily from mid-March to October from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. or 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., depending on the season. During the winter months, the building is open on weekends and holidays, weather permitting.

Must see/do at Vista House
The major attraction of Vista House is its view, several miles in either direction, of the Columbia River. The building's location on a promontory provides long, sweeping views up and down the river. Inside Vista House, there are interpretive displays about the history and architecture of the building, a gift shop and an espresso bar. Make sure to pay attention to the architectural details of Vista House, which include opalized glass, winding staircases and detailed woodwork and stonework.

Other places to visit near Vista House
The area around Vista House is full of accessible waterfalls and nice, short hikes. Multnomah Falls, the second longest year-round waterfall in the United States, is approximately nine miles from Vista House. At the Horsetail Falls trailhead, 11 miles from Vista House, a 2.3-mile easy loop hike takes in three waterfalls.

Insider tip for visitors to Vista House
Because the promontory viewing area is so exposed to the elements and can often be quite windy, so hold onto your hats. Bring extra layers to keep you warm while taking in the view.
