St. Stephen's Episcopal Parish, located in downtown Portland, has been serving the community since 1863, initially opening its doors at SW 13th and Clay 130 years ago. Renowned for its progressive values, the parish has a rich history of advocating for marginalized communities, being the first Episcopal Church in Portland to welcome African American members and to host a marriage ceremony for an interracial couple.
Throughout its history, St. Stephen's has acted as a safe haven for the LGBTQ community and has provided support for organizations that serve the unhoused population in downtown Portland. As of January 31, 2025, the church building will be sold to Operation Nightwatch, ensuring the continuation of its legacy of service and community engagement.
