In 1971, several area doctors saw the need for a private facility that would provide abortions for women. Prior to that time, abortion procedures in Portland and throughout Oregon were performed at a teaching hospital. There were no guarantees of privacy, little or no respect for patients, and only after meeting with a social worker and being labeled
